Hurricane claim denied or underpaid?

After a hurricane, insurers are buried in claims. Adjusters rush through, miss damage, blame flood for what the wind did, and apply deductibles that may not fit.

Our licensed public adjusters inspect in person whenever the claim needs it, separate wind damage from flood, check how the deductible was applied, and build the claim for everything the storm did. Your claim review is free.

Sound familiar?

  • Their adjuster found almost nothing.
  • They blamed the water damage on flood.
  • The estimate came in under the deductible.
  • They said the roof was old, not storm damaged.
  • Months later, the claim is still open.

Their first answer after a storm isn't the last word. Call us before you accept it.

What the insurance company says after a hurricane

Every storm brings the same lines. Here’s how we answer them.

What they say
What we do

“That's flood damage, not wind.”

Wind and flood are covered by different policies, and insurers sometimes blame flood for damage the wind did first. We document the roof openings, broken windows and water lines, so wind damage is paid under your homeowners policy.

“There was no opening for the rain to get in.”

Many policies cover rain damage inside the home only when wind or debris first opened the roof or walls. We find and photograph those openings, from lifted shingles and torn flashing to broken windows and failed seals, and tie the damage inside to them.

“The damage is under your hurricane deductible.”

Hurricane deductibles are often a percentage of your dwelling coverage, so a low estimate can wipe out a claim. We write our own estimate and check how the deductible was applied, because a full estimate often clears it.

“That's old damage, not from this storm.”

Insurers point to age and earlier storms to pay less. We document what this storm did: fresh breaks, debris marks and damage that lines up with the wind, and show it in the claim.

Does homeowners insurance cover hurricane damage?

Usually, for wind damage. Most homeowners policies cover what hurricane winds do to the roof, walls, windows, fences and the inside of the home once the wind opens it up. Many carry a separate hurricane or windstorm deductible, often a percentage of the dwelling coverage instead of a flat amount, and some coastal homes carry wind coverage on a separate policy.

Storm surge and rising water are flood, which a homeowners policy usually excludes. That goes to a flood policy, if you have one. We sort out which policy owes what before you accept either answer.

When the insurance adjuster found nothing

After a big storm, insurers send adjusters who are working through a heavy load of claims. Damage gets missed, especially on the roof, in the attic and inside walls where water spreads. A low first estimate is common, and it is not the final word.

We inspect the property ourselves, write a line-by-line estimate and send it with photos and documentation, then negotiate for the difference. Call us for a second opinion before you accept their number.

We know how buildings are designed, how they are built, and how to spot the damage most people miss. On complex claims like fires with structural damage or hidden issues, that construction insight and policy knowledge lets us build a stronger claim and challenge a low offer with real authority.

What to know about a hurricane claim

Waiting to see what the insurance company does is how good claims run out of time.

Don't settle for less

The first check is rarely the last word

The adjuster the insurance company sends works for them, not you, and their first number is often low. Have us check their estimate line by line before you settle for it.

Don't let them call it flood

Wind and water are two claims

Insurers sometimes blame flood for damage the wind did first, and the homeowners claim shrinks. Call us before you accept that answer, so wind damage is paid where it belongs.

Don't wait on them

The clock is already running

We hear it all the time. You know the check is too low, so you call the adjuster one more time and wait. Then months go by, and the deadlines in your policy keep running. Call now, while you still have options.

Questions about hurricane damage claims

Answers to the questions homeowners ask us most after a hurricane.

What is a hurricane deductible?

A separate deductible for hurricane damage, often a percentage of your home's dwelling coverage instead of a flat amount. On a home insured for $300,000, a 2% deductible is $6,000. Insurers sometimes apply it to damage it doesn't fit, or more than once. We check how it was applied against your policy. Call us for a free review.

My insurer says the damage is flood, not wind. What can I do?

Don't accept it until the damage is documented. Wind often opens the roof and windows before the water rises, and that damage belongs on your homeowners policy. We separate the two and build the wind claim. Call us before you accept their answer.

Is it too late to file a claim for an older hurricane?

Not always, but the deadlines are shorter than most people think, and they keep running. If the insurer denied or underpaid it, call us now for a free review.

My home is a total loss. What happens next?

Your policy's dwelling, other structures, contents and living expense coverages all come into play. Insurers often undervalue the rebuild and the belongings. We build the full claim, room by room and item by item. Call us before you accept their number.

Do I have to accept the insurance adjuster's estimate?

No. Their estimate is their opinion of what they owe. A public adjuster can write your own estimate, back it with photos and documentation, and negotiate for the difference. Call us before you accept their number.

How much does a public adjuster charge?

You pay nothing upfront, and if we don't recover money, you owe us nothing. Our fee is a percentage of what we recover for you, set in writing before you sign, and never more than your state's law allows. Call, and we'll walk you through how it works on your claim.

Should I call my insurance company or a public adjuster first?

Call us before you call them. What you say on that first call can hurt your claim, and most policyholders don't know which words give the insurance company a reason to pay less or deny. We'll help you report it the right way, so call as soon as you find the damage.

My insurer already paid, but not enough. Is it too late to hire you?

You can hire us before you file, in the middle of a claim, or after the insurer pays too little. Many of the nearly 7,000 claims we've handled started just like yours. Don't sit on a low check, though: the deadlines to ask for more keep running. Call us now, while you still have time.
