When damage closes your doors, the building is only part of the claim

Business interruption coverage, often called business income coverage, is meant to replace the income you lose and cover the extra cost of keeping going while your property is repaired. It’s also one of the easiest parts of a claim for an insurance company to underpay.

The property damage and the business income claim have to tell the same story: what was damaged, how long the repairs really take, and what the shutdown cost you. We make sure they do.

What business interruption coverage can pay, depending on your policy

Net income you would have earned

Continuing expenses like payroll, rent and loan interest

Extra expense to keep operating, such as a temporary location

Rent you lose from tenants while the building is repaired

Closures a civil authority orders because of damage nearby

Losses when a key supplier or customer is damaged

Where business interruption claims get cut

Waiting to see what the insurance company does is how good claims run out of time.

Don't settle for less

They cut the repair time short

Lost income is paid for the time it should take to repair or rebuild, and insurers often estimate that time short. Call us before you accept their timeline.

Don't take their numbers

They project your income low

The insurance company estimates what you would have earned. A slow season, a new location or a growing business can make that estimate too low. Your own sales records prove the real number. Call us before you accept theirs.

Don't wait on them

The clock is already running

We hear it all the time. You know the check is too low, so you call the adjuster one more time and wait. Then months go by, and the deadlines in your policy keep running. Call now, while you still have options.

Questions about business interruption claims

Answers to the questions business owners ask us most.

Does my commercial policy cover business interruption?

Not every policy does. It's usually included or added as business income coverage, with its own limits, waiting period and conditions. Send us your policy, and we'll tell you what it covers, free.

Does my building have to be damaged?

Usually, yes. Most business income coverage starts with direct physical damage to covered property. Some policies also cover a closure a civil authority orders because of damage nearby, or damage at a key supplier. Call us before you assume you're not covered, and we'll read your policy against what happened.

How is lost income calculated?

The insurance company estimates what your business would have earned without the damage, subtracts the costs you didn't have to pay, and pays that for the time the repairs should take. Every piece of that is an estimate, and each one can be argued. Your sales history, tax returns and payroll prove the real number. Call us before you accept theirs.

My insurer paid for the building but not my lost income. Can you help?

Yes. Business income is often paid low, paid late or never claimed at all. Call us before you sign a final release, while you still have options.

How much does a public adjuster charge?

You pay nothing upfront, and if we don't recover money, you owe us nothing. Our fee is a percentage of what we recover for you, set in writing before you sign, and never more than your state's law allows. Call, and we'll walk you through how it works on your claim.

Should I call my insurance company or a public adjuster first?

Call us before you call them. What you say on that first call can hurt your claim, and most policyholders don't know which words give the insurance company a reason to pay less or deny. We'll help you report it the right way, so call as soon as you find the damage.
